What Vaccines Will My Baby Need?
Vaccinations are one of the most important steps to protect your baby’s health. They safeguard your little one from potentially life-threatening diseases, helping build immunity early in life. But with so many vaccines recommended, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed.
Here at Northeast Pediatric Associates PA, our team likes to inform expectant mothers about what’s to come once you bring your little one into the world. Our guide helps you understand the vaccines your baby needs and why they’re essential.
Why vaccines are important
Vaccines work by stimulating your baby’s immune system to recognize and fight specific infections. They’re carefully tested for safety and effectiveness, with side effects usually limited to mild fever or soreness. The diseases they prevent, however, can cause severe complications like brain damage, paralysis, or even death.
Recommended vaccines
Here’s the breakdown of when your child should have vaccines and which ones are recommended:
Birth to 2 months: starting strong
The journey begins at birth. Before leaving the hospital, your baby receives the Hepatitis B (HepB) vaccine to protect against a virus that can cause severe liver damage.
At their first checkup, typically around two months, your baby receives several key vaccines, including:
- DTaP: guards against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough)
- IPV: prevents poliovirus, which can cause paralysis
- Hib: protects against Haemophilus influenzae type b, a leading cause of meningitis in young children
- PCV: shields against pneumococcal disease, which can lead to pneumonia as well as blood infections
- Rotavirus: an oral vaccine that prevents severe diarrhea caused by rotavirus
4 to 6 months: building immunity
At these visits, your baby receives booster doses of most of the vaccines given at two months. Boosters strengthen their developing immune system, ensuring long-lasting protection.
6 to 12 months: flu and more
Starting at six months, your baby should receive an annual influenza (flu) vaccine. Babies and young children are especially vulnerable to flu complications, making this vaccine vital.
Around their first birthday, your baby receives the MMR vaccine for measles, mumps, and rubella, and the varicella vaccine to prevent chickenpox. Another dose of HepA (hepatitis A) is typically introduced at this stage.
Keeping track
Here at Northeast Pediatric Associates PA, we provide a vaccine schedule tailored to your baby’s needs. Most vaccines are administered in multiple doses, so be sure to bring your baby in for every checkup to complete the series.
Protecting your baby
Not only do vaccines protect your baby, but they also protect the community by reducing the spread of infectious diseases. By staying up-to-date on your child’s immunizations, you’re giving them the best start in life — safe, healthy, and protected.
